Illinois is at the hub of national transportation and commerce. From major interstate and national highways to railroads, waterways and air travel, northeast Illinois plays a vital role in every aspect of transportation in America.
We are home to the world's largest airport (O'Hare), the most majestic of the Great Lakes and a phenomenal natural resource in Lake Michigan; a diverse set of interstate highways along which billions of dollars in commerce travels across each day, and the heart of American rail lines that all lead to and from Chicago.
The 14th Congressional District in particular has many regional transportation strengths, from small airports to major interstate highways and a commerce-friendly series of waterways that literally help churn the flow of economic activity from Illinois down through the Mississippi River basin.
As a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure during the recent 112th Congress, I helped to lead efforts to invest in strengthening our existing transportation resources and plan a long-term strategy to meet the needs of the future.
After all, our transportation infrastructure connects us to our families, our communities and our commerce. It connects parents and children with jobs and school, it connects businesses and industries with suppliers and customers.
I will continue to be a strong and effective advocate for suburban transportation needs and work with members of both parties in Congress to help reduce congestion, increase options for commuters, and create thousands of new jobs for men and women with the passion, training and skills to make Illinois' transportation network the envy of the Midwest.
