Letter to the Editor: Congress must continue National Flood Insurance Program

To the Editor:

The nation’s eyes are on Texas, but historic flooding still affects our own communities.

When meeting with Gurnee and Fox Lake officials and residents, I was heartbroken at the devastating damage to homes, businesses and families. At a briefing, Lake County Chairman Lawlor and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency detailed ongoing cleanup and damage mitigation efforts. I have sent a letter to FEMA Director Long requesting help to determine how much federal assistance is available. We still have far to go.

It’s been encouraging to see neighbor helping neighbor with cleanup, transportation, meals and childcare. Many simply give a supportive shoulder.

Residents rightfully expect their flood insurance to cover losses, including those policies provided by the federal government.

Congress created the National Flood Insurance Program to supplement the availability of private, affordable insurance. Millions of homeowners and businesses, including more than 4,000 Lake and McHenry County residents, depend on the NFIP to help manage flood risk and pay claims when flooding occurs.

The NFIP will expire on Sept. 30 without congressional action. We should all agree there’s no room for political shenanigans.

Serving on the Financial Services Committee, I am fighting to keep effective programs alive and make improvements so taxpayers are protected and benefits are available in the future.

I am fighting to reauthorize the law and supported it in committee this summer to help homeowners restore and rebuild. I remain in close contact with House leadership to make sure it is signed into law.
